Parasite star Song Kang-ho and Maggie Gyllenhaal amongst 8 prominent names to join Cannes 2021 jury June 25, 2021 at 04:51PM

Actor Song Kang-ho, who was appreciated for his performance in Academy Award-winning movie Parasite, and Hollywood actor Maggie Gyllenhaal are joining the board of jury of 2021 Cannes Film Festival.  The two actors are among the eight prominent artists who will join filmmaker Spike for this year’s event.

The jury list includes director Mati Diop, singer-songwriter Mylene Farmer, writer-director Jessica Hausner, French star Melanie Laurent, writer-director Kleber Mendonca Filho, and actor Tahar Rahim, informed the festival organizers in a statement.

Song Kang-ho starrer Parasite, the multiple Oscar-winning movie in 2019 directed by Bong Joon-ho, premiered at Cannes in 2019 and became the first South Korean film to win the coveted Palme d’Or trophy.

When it comes to other jury members, tey also have connection to Cannes. Mati Diop won Cannes Grand Prix in 2019 for the film Atlantics, while Jessica Hausner also competed at Cannes 2019 with Little Joe, which made Emily Beecham win the Best Actress award. Actor Tahar Rahim got his major breakout in Jacques Audiard’s Grand Prix-winning film A Prophet. Melanie Laurent starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Palme d’Or contender film Inglourious Basterds and Kleber Mendonça Filho, who won jury prize for Bacurau.

 The jury will announce the list of winners on July 17, during the 2021 Cannes closing ceremony.

Tandav controversy: Supreme Court refuses to grant protection from arrest to makers; says freedom of speech is not absolute January 27, 2021 at 04:37PM

On Wednesday while hearing pleas seeking stay on FIRs against actors and producers of the web series Tandav , the Supreme Court said that freedom of speech is not absolute. A bench headed by Ashok Bhushan said that the petitioners should go to the high courts to seek quashing of these cases. The court also refused to grant protection from arrest to the makers of Tandav against whom FIRs have been filed. The case was heard by a bench of justices Ashok Bhushan, RS Reddy and MR Shah. Senior advocates Fali S Nariman, Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra cited the recent judgement of the top court in Arnab Goswami's case during the hearing. "Is this way liberty should be protected in the country and FIRs are being filed across the country," Luthra said adding that the director of the web series, Ali Abbas Zafar, is being harassed. Paresh Rawal replaces Rishi Kapoor and resumes shoot for Sharmaji Namkeen June 30, 2021 at 04:06PM

As the Maharashtra government announced some ease in lockdown restrictions, many films have resumed their shoots. Late actor Rishi Kapoor's last film Sharmaji Namkeen has also gone on floors. Rishi played the central character in the movie and passed away on April 30, last year. His remaining portions of the film were taken over by veteran actor Paresh Rawal. Paresh Rawal started shooting for the remaining portions in March this year. However, with the second wave of the novel coronavirus, the shoot came to a halt again. According to a daily, Paresh Rawal has resumed the shoot for an important sequence at a school in Goregaon, Mumbai which also features Juhi Chawla and Satish Kaushik. The team along with Paresh Rawal will shoot for a week-long schedule, after which the movie will wrap up and go for the post-production process.
