Shah Rukh Khan’s production Betaal lands in plagiarism row; Marathi writers file a case  May 23, 2020 at 01:50PM

Netflix's upcoming original show Betaal which is produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment has landed in a plagiarism row. Two Marathi writers have claimed that the story has been copied from their zombie film script called Vetaal.

The writers Sameer Wadekar and Mahesh Goswami have filed a case against Shah Rukh Khan's production house and Netflix. The writers moved Bombay High Court after the trailer was released last week. Talking to a tabloid, Sameer said that they had approached several production houses with their script, but Red Chillies Entertainment was not one of them. He said that he has not been able to figure out how the idea reached them. He also said that the show went on floors in July 2019, a year after his script was registered with the Screenwriters Association(SWA). 

The writers have also registered a complaint with the SWA too. Meanwhile, Betaal is written by Patrick Graham and Suhani Kanwar and revolves around a counter-insurgency squad that aims to displace tribals from a village. On the other hand, Wadekar said that their story is centred on an environmentalist who opposes a mining company that tries to drive away the villagers. Wadekar said that there are at least 10 plot points that are similar. 

While, the High Court has dismissed their petition they said that the writers can seek damages if the plagiarism charges are proved.

Tandav controversy: Supreme Court refuses to grant protection from arrest to makers; says freedom of speech is not absolute January 27, 2021 at 04:37PM

On Wednesday while hearing pleas seeking stay on FIRs against actors and producers of the web series Tandav , the Supreme Court said that freedom of speech is not absolute. A bench headed by Ashok Bhushan said that the petitioners should go to the high courts to seek quashing of these cases. The court also refused to grant protection from arrest to the makers of Tandav against whom FIRs have been filed. The case was heard by a bench of justices Ashok Bhushan, RS Reddy and MR Shah. Senior advocates Fali S Nariman, Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra cited the recent judgement of the top court in Arnab Goswami's case during the hearing. "Is this way liberty should be protected in the country and FIRs are being filed across the country," Luthra said adding that the director of the web series, Ali Abbas Zafar, is being harassed. Paresh Rawal replaces Rishi Kapoor and resumes shoot for Sharmaji Namkeen June 30, 2021 at 04:06PM

As the Maharashtra government announced some ease in lockdown restrictions, many films have resumed their shoots. Late actor Rishi Kapoor's last film Sharmaji Namkeen has also gone on floors. Rishi played the central character in the movie and passed away on April 30, last year. His remaining portions of the film were taken over by veteran actor Paresh Rawal. Paresh Rawal started shooting for the remaining portions in March this year. However, with the second wave of the novel coronavirus, the shoot came to a halt again. According to a daily, Paresh Rawal has resumed the shoot for an important sequence at a school in Goregaon, Mumbai which also features Juhi Chawla and Satish Kaushik. The team along with Paresh Rawal will shoot for a week-long schedule, after which the movie will wrap up and go for the post-production process.
